Spain's numismatic history is marked by a rich past dating back to the discovery of America in 1492. In the 16th century, coinage began in Spanish colonies with the Peso and Real being central currency units. During the colonial era, the Escudo played a significant role. In the 19th century, the Peseta was introduced, in circulation until the Euro's introduction in 2002.

Coins often depicted the coat of arms or the king's bust. Notably, coins under King Juan Carlos I (reign: 1975-2014) were succeeded by those under King Felipe VI (since 2014).
