Groningen
The coin history of Groningen is deeply rooted in Dutch minting traditions. Beginning with the ancient era, when Germanic tribes like the Batavi and Ubii minted their own coins, the region evolved during the Middle Ages. The Roman conquest of the southern Netherlands led to the use of Roman currency. In the 16th century, Groningen was an important mint, producing quarter stuivers until 1609. The Reductie van Groningen in 1594 marked the city's transition to the Republic of the United Netherlands.
