Cologne Coins
The history of Cologne's coin minting stretches back to the 3rd century. During Roman times, Cologne was an important mint, though less significant than places like Lyon. In the Middle Ages, particularly from the 10th century onwards, Cologne's mint gained prominence under kings like Otto I and archbishops such as Brun I. Coins often featured rulers and were made from materials like silver and gold.
Coinage in Cologne was influenced not only by kings but also by archbishops. Rulers like Otto II, Otto III, and Conrad II had their coins minted in Cologne. From the 13th century, however, the image of kings disappeared from these coins.
